The 35-year-old married father of two young girls was arrested on 1 June while making a delivery to the garrison in Fort Hamilton. A background check revealed there was a warrant for his arrest for immigration law violations. Federal judge Alison Nathan granted the stay until 20 July. Villavicencio will remain in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) custody in New Jersey until his case goes to court. New York governor Andrew Cuomo had asked federal homeland security officials to look into the case, saying recent detentions raise significant legal questions. In a letter to the Ice office in New York, the Democrat said Villavicencio’s “expedited removal serves no legitimate public safety purpose and the circumstances leading to his arrest and detention raise serious legal and policy concerns”.Villavicencio’s wife, Sandra Chica, is an American citizen and their daughters, ages two and three, were born in the US. When he arrived at Fort Hamilton, guards requested identification and he produced a city identification card. A background check showed that Villavicencio had been ordered to leave the US in 2010, but stayed. Redmond Haskins, a spokesman for the Legal Aid Society, a nonprofit organization that provides free services to clients who cannot afford them, said Villavicencio has no criminal record. Haskins said attorneys worked through the night preparing the emergency stay request that was argued in court on Saturday afternoon. “Although we are disappointed that Pablo will remained detained, today’s stay is a victory for him and his family, and also for due process and the fair administration of justice,” said Gregory Copeland, the supervising attorney of Legal Aid’s Immigration Law Unit. “This decision is also a reminder that the judiciary can still serve as a powerful check when other branches of government make hasty, cruel and reckless decisions.” The attorneys said they will work with Villavicencio to help him secure valid immigration status. Flintstone house sparks lawsuit from California town Its an eyesore

The experimental house was built in the 1970s using a technique that involved spraying concrete to create curved walls. The president earlier this month floated the idea of transporting undocumented migrants stopped at the US-Mexico border to “sanctuary cities” that do not enforce federal immigration policy, a move that critics called illustrative of the White House’s callous approach to the issue and some Trump allies called impractical. … we have a small favour to ask. Coalition of Ereader Manufacturers Files Petition with the FCC

first_imgImage Source: ThinkProgress.orgThe Coalition of E-reader Manufacturers (which includes Amazon – makers of the Kindle – and Sony – which manufactures its own e-reader) filed a petition with the FCC recently.  The petition, basically, seeks to exempt e-readers from FCC rules regarding advanced communications services as they apply to accessibility for people with disabilities. This means that e-readers would require fundamentally altering the devices to be more like general-purpose tablets in cost, form factor, weight, user interface, and reduced battery life, and yet the necessary changes, if they were made, would not yield a meaningful benefit to individuals with disabilities. You can read a summary of the petition at www.fcc.gov. You can read a legal filing of the coalition’s attorney’s here. The FCC is taking public comments on this issue. PostcardMania Releases Direct Mail Integration for Data Companies CRMs and Franchises New

first_imgPostcardMania, a $59 million Inc. 500 marketing firm, recently launched new integration for tech companies and franchises that makes designing, ordering, and mailing a targeted direct mail campaign as simple as a few clicks.SaaS companies and franchises alike can now offer users an integrated print collateral solution without any upfront investment in print manufacturing or delivery.PostcardMania’s software operates as a dual design builder storefront and API solution, meaning companies can offer their users an in-app one-stop-shop for direct mail. This integration now streamlines several outside touchpoints that business owners and marketers previously had to go through to add direct mail to their pipeline and customer journey.PostcardMania may not be the first entry into the web-to-print market, but CEO Joy Gendusa cites three reasons her solution stands apart from competitors: user experience (UX), high standards of quality control stemming from a 20-year track record of printing 1.8 billion postcards in-house, and PostcardMania’s exclusive results-based design formula based on 239,396 campaigns and counting.Marketing Technology News: WorldRemit Raises $175 Million in Series D Funding“What some companies don’t know when they integrate with most web-to-print software is that they don’t actually print your postcards,” said Gendusa. “Most direct mail integration options on the market now dish out your orders to any printer in the country that happens to have space on their print run, which is a manufacturing term for the huge sheet that a bunch of different advertisements are printed on. The downstream effect is that these SaaS companies don’t know who is providing print collateral for their customers, and that means they have zero quality control.”At least one major software company has already migrated its web-to-print integration to PostcardMania from an existing integration due to lack of quality control.“Another factor these companies face is a lack of success for subscribers and franchisors who do dabble with direct mail,” continued Gendusa. “Users often have no experience with direct mail and don’t know what works. PostcardMania has 21 years of direct mail experience and results research on our side, which led to an exclusive design formula that maximizes direct mail success on a per-industry basis — and has been migrated to our integration platform.”Marketing Technology News: Email Verification Company Kickbox Announces Release of New Partner PortalClients that interface with PostcardMania’s software also take advantage of discounted direct mail pricing, an on-site United States Postal Service rep and clearing facility to expedite delivery, and an industry-best UX dashboard. The user experience was of paramount importance to Gendusa, who has overseen — and scrapped — numerous iterations of the software over the course of several years due to failure to meet UX standards.“My goal for this integration has always been that everyday small business owners — and not just professional marketers or agencies — could log on and set up their own direct mail campaign easily, with zero stoppages or headaches,” said Gendusa.PostcardMania is now offering free demos of their storefront software and API to interested tech companies and franchises.Marketing Technology News: TechTarget Integrates 1st and 3rd Party Intent Data within Priority Engine Platform to Help Companies Make Faster Sales and Marketing Progress with Best Fit Accounts PostcardMania Releases Direct Mail Integration for Data Companies, CRMs and Franchises: New Software is 1st to Trigger Proven Mailer Designs Based on 239,396 Campaigns MTS Staff WriterJune 6, 2019, 7:17 pmJune 6, 2019 API solutiondirect mail campaignJoy GendusaMarketing Technology NewsNewsPostcardMania Previous ArticleEmerging Audio Display Ad Company Adsonica Appoints Industry Leader Steven A. Valve Introduces Machine Learning Algorithm to Recommend New Steam Games

first_img Finding games on Steam has always been difficult, but the flood of titles being published on the platform has made discoverability a massive problem for creators and gamers alike. Valve is attempting to improve the situation with a new game recommendation system that relies on AI, rather than user-curated metadata. The AI isn’t given any information about a game at all, rather than its release date, and it isn’t impacted by review scores or tags. Instead, it learns about games solely based on what players do.Valve writes:Underlying this new recommender is a neural-network model that is trained to recommend games based on a user’s playtime history, along with other salient data. We train the model based on data from many millions of Steam users and many billions of play sessions, giving us robust results that capture the nuances of different play patterns and covers our catalog. The model is parameterized so that we can restrict output to games released within a specified time-window, and can be adjusted to prefer games a higher or lower underlying popularity. These parameters are exposed to the user, allowing you to select whether to see only recent releases in the results, or go all the way back to include games released a decade ago. Similarly, you can choose whether to see mainstream hits, or deep cuts from the catalog. Regardless of the settings of the sliders, the results will always be personalized and relevant to the individual user.Valve’s ability to create recommendation engines, search tools, and discoverability enhancements that treat players and creators fairly has taken some hits over the past year. During the recent “Grand Prix” summer sale, Valve created a confusing competition around the event. As a result, gamers began removing indie titles from their wish lists en masse in an attempt to game the system and receive expensive AAA titles for free, out of a mistaken belief that deleting low-cost titles increased their chances of receiving expensive free games. Creators panicked. Having a game on your wish list means receiving updates when it goes on sale, and those notifications apparently have a major impact on how many copies a game sells overall. Developers are exceedingly unhappy with how the Steam sale played out this year, and many saw no uptick at all in either wish list pickups or overall sales. The new game recommendation system Valve is unveiling today isn’t a direct response to the Grand Prix debacle, but it’s an example of how the company is attempting to improve its own recommendation algorithms in ways that will be fair to game creators and help players find titles they want to experience. To date, Valve’s changes to its recommendation system have been controversial; an algorithm bug last year drove far more traffic to already-established titles at the expense of smaller titles. After the Grand Prix problems, some developers have lost faith that Valve is particularly interested in solving the situation.“Before October 2018 (and for a few months after that while I gave Steam the benefit of the doubt), I told anyone who asked me that Steam was 100% worth it for indie developers,” developer Yitz told Kotaku via Twitter DM:Now, that trust is gone, and it’s not because I’ve changed or become more cynical… This Steam sale was a disaster, but I’m far more concerned about the overall trend we’ve seen in the Steam algorithm since October last year: pushing unpopular (including ‘mostly negative’ reviewed) triple-A games over titles that Steam has more than enough data to know would be a better match for the consumer.I decided to take the Steam recommendation algorithm out for a spin, to see what kind of titles it would recommend for me, personally. In my specific case, I’m prepared for the algorithm to be a little less accurate — some of the games I’ve spent the most time “playing,” historically, are titles I’ve used for benchmarking, and it’s possible that will throw off the algorithm. I also have a very bad habit of leaving games alt-tabbed while running in the background, which can also drastically inflate my own playtimes.I have not spent 73.5 actual days of my life playing Fallout 4.That’s the default view when you login. Your top games are listed along the left, while recommended titles are on the right. Here’s the top game listing when you play with the “Niche” versus “Popular” slider. My “Popular” games list is on the left below, while the full “Niche” recommendations are on the right.Regarding its recommendation algorithm, Valve writes:One direction is to gather every single piece of information about a game, and then make guesses about what games are similar, and then recommend those “similar” games. But that allows for all sorts of weird distortions— just because you play a lot of Beat Saber, doesn’t mean we should only ever recommend you VR rhythm games. This model takes a different approach. It disregards most of the usual data about a game, like genre or price point. Instead, it looks at what games you play and what games other people play, then makes informed suggestions based on the decisions of other people playing games on Steam. The idea is that if players with broadly similar play habits to you also tend to play another game you haven’t tried yet, then that game is likely to be a good recommendation for you.The “niche” versus “popular” slider seems as though it could use some fine-tuning. Somehow, Metro 2033 Redux is the most popular title recommended for me under both options. But it’s odd that this game should be recommended to me in the first place, given that I own (but have never bothered to beat) Metro 2033. The same is true of Metro Last Light Redux. It makes sense to recommend Metro 2033 Redux to me if the only thing you’re examining is either hours played (I used it for benchmarking) or “number of games owned in the Metro series.” Examining the number of unlocked achievements in these titles would show that I barely played either. The other shortcoming I see in this data isn’t exactly Valve or Steam’s fault. I own Far Cry 3 on uPlay and Witcher 3 on GoG. I played games like Dishonored, Borderlands 2, and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood using a friend’s Steam account. The quality of the recommendations is a bit mixed — I loved Dishonored and found Borderlands 2 relatively amusing, but was not a huge fan of Far Cry 3 and have never actually played very much of The Witcher 3. The “niche” titles are games I haven’t played or heard of, so it seems to be fulfilling its goals in that regard, though that also makes it more difficult to interpret if I’d like them. The goal is for this tool to be a better recommendation engine for games that isn’t susceptible to being gamed or manipulated, or that requires developers to worry about optimizing for underlying and unknown algorithms. The idea is for the AI model to watch what players are playing and recommend these games to people who play similar games to those people. We’ll have to wait for data on how it works, but discoverability has been a major problem for every kind of online store. Solving it, or even improving it, would be a major achievement for any storefront. Now Read:Gamers Hate the Epic Store, but They Hated Steam, TooSteam Prepares to Roll Out Revamped Library PageValve Lays Off 13 Employees, May Have Slashed VR Division Ginny From ‘Harry Potter’ Is 28 and Unrecognizably Gorgeous We Finally Understand Why ‘Criminal Minds’ Got Canceled Tarantino Has Written Multiple Episodes of Rick Dalton TV Series Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Google Plus Reddit Hacker News Flipboard Email Copy 0shares This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Cardinal Paths 2019 State of Marketing Technology Report Highlights Consolidation Disruption

first_imgThe 4th annual installment of Cardinal Path‘s State of Digital Marketing Analytics in the Top 1000 U.S. Online Retailers uncovers trends within enterprise marketing technology (martech) ecosystems of the largest online retail organizations. The report drills into the tools and platforms in use by the largest online retailers and surfaces trends into how these organizations are building and using their martech stacks– a foundational part of a digital strategy. This year’s report underscores increased consolidation across the powerhouse platforms of Adobe and Google. Adobe Analytics has the largest share of the Top 50 (56%) while Google Analytics has the largest share of 51-500 (84%) and 501-1000 (89%). Other tools, from both platform providers and other leading vendors, across testing & personalization, tag management, and data management platforms (DMPs), are ranked by adoption and category, and compared with previous years’ data.Marketing Technology News: Study: Consumers Reject Brands That Advertise on ‘Fake News’ and Objectionable Content Online“Martech is a driving force behind digital strategy, and with marketing analytics spend forecasted to grow by more than 200% in the next three years, there’s a lot of pressure for these tools to deliver value”, says Nick Iyengar, Group Director, Digital Intelligence, Cardinal Path, and lead author of the report.“What we’ve seen here confirms a growing investment in martech, but it takes more than a tool to create ROI. We’re also seeing a lot of movement between different vendors which can mean that organizations may not be prepared for the complexity that new technology can bring. With any martech implementation, there’s a need to align process, people, and goals to ensure the powerful new tools will generate business benefits.”Marketing Technology News: Triton Digital Integrates Centro’s Basis Platform with the a2x Programmatic MarketplaceOf note this year is the rise of Google Optimize to a leadership position in the testing, optimization & personalization space after launching its free version in 2017, and a significant decline in the adoption of DMPs over last year, which is consistent with marketers’ focus on 1st party data and the rise of Customer Data Platforms to meet the demands of an increasingly stringent regulatory environment,  the decline of traditional cookie-based measurement, and the growing importance of first party data.Cardinal Path is hosting a webinar on June 26th to review the report and discuss ways that marketers can strike the right balance of tools and skills to achieve their objectives.Marketing Technology News: Mindtree to Showcase Contextual, Real-Time Solutions for Personalized Traveler Experiences at HITEC Minneapolis Cardinal Path’s 2019 State of Marketing Technology Report Highlights Consolidation & Disruption PRNewswireJune 19, 2019, 10:20 pmJune 19, 2019 AdobeanalyticsCardinal PathMarketing TechnologyNewsNick Iyengar Previous ArticleExperian Appoints Shri Santhanam as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Global Analytics and AINext ArticleAdmetrics Launches Marketing AI Assistant Newton to Advise Marketers on Growth Opportunitieslast_img read more

Delhi Court Questions Atishi Marlenas Right to File Plea Against Gautam Gambhir

first_imgNew Delhi: A Delhi court Wednesday asked AAP’s Lok Sabha candidate from East Delhi, Atishi Marlena, to prove her locus standi for filing a petition against her BJP rival Gautam Gambhir for allegedly enrolling as a voter in two assembly segments.Metropolitan Magistrate Viplav Dabas directed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader to file more documents to prove her locus standi (the right to bring an action or to appear in a court) after her counsel said there was a “prima facie” case against Gambhir. “How you are affected by this? If he has committed any wrong, what’s your locus,” the court asked.Advocate Karuna Nundy, appearing for Marlena, told the court that Gambhir was a “dead man walking. He is not eligible to vote and will be disqualified as a candidate”.”Even if he wins, people of East Delhi should not be saddled with an MP who has no chance of survival in the near future. Voters should not be made to suffer,” she told the court. The court has posted the matter for further hearing on May 6, six days before Delhi goes to polls. The plea, filed by advocate Mohd Irshad on Thursday, alleged that Gambhir has enrolled “deliberately” and “illegally” as a voter in Karol Bagh and Rajinder Nagar assembly segments. The petition further alleged that Gambhir has provided false information in his nomination papers, accompanying affidavit and other documents preceding voter screening and registration in order to be seen as qualified to contest elections and potentially secure membership of the parliament.Marlena has said in the plea that the details of Gambhir’s registration in the constituencies were available online on the Election Commission’s National Voters’ Service Portal. The plea has sought directions to the Delhi Police to investigate offences under sections 17 and 31 of the Representation of People Act (RPA), 1950, and section 125A (penalty for filing false affidavit) of RPA, 1951.Section 17 of the RPA, provides that no person is entitled to be enrolled as a voter in more than one constituency and its violation is a criminal offence punishable with maximum of one year imprisonment.Section 31 of the Act makes false declaration in the matter of inclusion or exclusion of voter rolls punishable with up to one year in prison.”It is clear that the Gambhir has made and continues to provide false information/statements/declarations to the relevant authorities like the Election Commission of India in order to obtain and retain enrolments as a voter in two constituencies,” the plea alleged. Both Marlena and Gambhir filed their nomination papers last week. Honey Singh Supporters Threatening Me Says Punjab Women Commission Chairperson

first_imgNew Delhi: Punjab Women Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati on Wednesday alleged that she has been receiving threat calls and abusive messages on social media after lodging a complaint against rapper Honey Singh for using lewd lyrics in his song. Gulati said she has filed a complaint in this regard with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh as well as the state’s Director General of Police. She demanded immediate arrest of the singer. She said if bail is granted to the singer then she will protest. Singh and music producer Bhushan Kumar have been booked by the Punjab Police on the charge of using vulgar lyrics in a song titled ‘Makhna’. “I have been receiving threat calls and getting abusive messages on my Twitter handle for lodging a complaint against Yo Yo Honey Singh,” Gulati said. “I am not scared of anyone. I will continue to raise my voice on such issues.”Gulati said she had reported the matter to police for further action. She said she had earlier written to the state home secretary, the Punjab director general of police and the inspector general of police (crime), demanding appropriate action against the singer for using objectionable words in the song. Singh has been booked under Sections 294 (punishment for obscene song and acts) and 509 (punishment for word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC. Police said the rapper had also been booked under Section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and relevant section of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, at Mohali in Punjab. Gulati said she had also urged police to arrest Singh as early as possible. “It is a lesson for singers like Honey Singh who use objectionable words against women,” she said, adding that the women panel would now keep a watch on other singers as well to ensure that vulgar lyrics did not find their way to songs. “If he (Honey Singh) applies for the bail, we will oppose it,” she said. Gulati further said she would request Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to set up a state’s own censor board to keep a check on vulgar songs.(With inputs from PTI) Honey SinghLewd LyricsMakhnaManisha Gulati First Published: July 10, 2019, 4:52 PM ISTlast_img read more

He will take the country even further in five years,” he added.According to the trends made available by the Election Commission, the BJP was leading in 300 seats across the country. As RJD Celebrates its Patriarchs Birthday Will it Succeed in Keeping Alive

first_img bihar grand alliancefodder scamLalu Prasad Yadavmisa bharti First Published: June 11, 2019, 9:25 PM IST | Edited by: Sohini Goswami In his recently published memoir ‘Gopalganj to Raisina’, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav talks about his inspiration in life — Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. In doing so, he compares his journey with that of the two legendary civil rights activists. Between the lines of the book, quite literally, Yadav sheds light on his enduring desire that his legacy, too, endures like that of his heroes. On Tuesday, when the RJD celebrated its founder’s 72nd birthday at its Patna and Delhi offices, the question that loomed large among many minds was how successful the RJD would be in keeping Yadav’s legacy alive, let alone strengthening it.Yadav’s daughter Misa Bharti, along with other party leaders like Manoj Jha and Jay Prakash Narayan Yadav were present at the function in Delhi, while his elder son Tej Pratap Yadav took charge of the celebrations at the Patna office. Yadav, who is serving a jail term at the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi after being convicted in a fodder scam case, is undergoing treatment at RIMS hospital. In such a scenario, the birthday celebrations looked nothing more than a tiring exercise by his family members and supporters to continue the legacy of a leader who is vilified, praised, adored and mocked at the same time by different sections of society, but remains a key figure who was instrumental in shaping post-Emergency multi-party politics of India after the decline of the ‘Congress System’ in the late 80s.While the ceremonial cake cutting and ‘chaach-lassi’ offering took place, the essence of festivity was missing the way it used to be when Yadav was in action. The forced smile that Misa and rest of his supporters were wearing, was indicative of the low morale of party cadres and leaders. This was the first occasion when party leaders and supporters had gathered to celebrate anything after the complete rout of the RJD in the recently held Lok Sabha election. This is for the first time since its inception that the RJD has no representation in the lower House of Parliament. In Yadav’s absence, the party is facing a never-seen-before leadership crisis. Former Bihar chief minister and Yadav’s younger son Tejashwi Yadav, who was considered politically mature and prudent, has failed to keep the flock together.Infighting and factionalism within the family and party have caused severe damage to the party’s voter-base as was evident in the last election. The RJD is looking at a divided house, as Tejashwi has not been successful in commanding respect among family members and other party leaders. Yadav’s elder son Tej Pratap, on several occasions, has caused an embarrassment to the party by opposing the decisions of his own brother, who was spearheading the RJD campaign for the parliamentary election. In fact, Tej Pratap even campaigned against grand alliance (of which the RJD is a senior partner in the state) candidates in Shivhar, Jahanabad and Chapra. The steady decline in the number of seats in the Lok Sabha — from 22 in 2004 to four in 2014 and to zero in 2019 — explains well the continued erosion of the support base of the RJD. The party’s vote-share has reduced from 20 per cent in 2014 Lok Sabha election to 15.3 per cent in 2019. The biggest challenge before the RJD now is to redeem itself from this scenario. Many political pundits feel that erosion in the party’s support base is mainly because of ignorance of the leadership on the political churnings, besides lack of inner-party democracy and infighting in the family.Soon after the results were announced, two veteran party functionaries — Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and Shivanand Tiwari — burst out against the leadership.Singh has questioned the party’s stand on issues like 10 per cent reservation for upper castes in education and employment and stressed that this was one of the main reasons for its debacle in the election. However, some party leaders are still hopeful. RJD spokesperson Bhai Virendra said, “There is no leadership crisis in the party. There is some misunderstanding which will be sorted out soon and we will take the thoughts and ideas of Lalu Prasad Yadav to the people, especially to those at the lower strata of society and they will reward us for our work.”Manoj Jha, RJD’s general secretary said, “It is not 72nd birthday of Lalu Prasad but it is the 72nd birthday of his principles which millions of his supporters are celebrating.”While such claims may help raise the spirits of RJD supporters, the fact remains the party is staring at a big challenge that it has to deal with in the coming months. The Bihar assembly election will take place next year and the RJD’s biggest challenge will be the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Despite differences, Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar has made it clear that he would remain with the NDA and would contest the state election with the BJP.Now, the question remains would the RJD be able to reinvent itself to defeat the NDA in the coming election. Veteran socialist leader Ramjeevan Prasad Singh who was a minister in the Yadav government expressed serious doubts about the prospects the RJD’s revival. “No other RJD leader has Yadav’s charisma and the fact is that politics based on caste equations is a passé. Now, whoever bats for people-friendly policies will be victorious in elections,” he said. last_img read more
