Invest Saint Lucia Rebrands in a New Era of Investment

first_imgChairman of Invest Saint Lucia, Mr. Pinkly Francis CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – Declaring that it has adopted “the Royal Standard” of investment promotion and facilitation, Invest Saint Lucia (ISL) has officially announced its rebranding as a national agency, striving to succeed for the benefit of all Saint Lucians. The unveiling of the new brand took place on Monday, September 30, 2019, during a press event at the Harbor Club, Rodney Bay.Officials of ISL presented the new brand as a “culture change”, rather than just cosmetic change, geared to attract investors who treat Saint Lucia as their own precious home, and not a place just to profit off its people and natural resources.Chief Executive Officer, Roderick Cherry, said that under the new tagline, “Make It Your Own”, a re-focused ISL will promote more aggressively the island’s natural and physical attributes, along with the economic advantages, such as a stable business environment to targeted sectors and investors.“On the international stage, what we have done with our new strategy is to try to focus very clearly on a few areas: tourism development, business process outsourcing, manufacturing and agro-processing. The difference now is that we have recognised what we do well, and we are using that, rather than throwing a wide net, to be very specific on the types of investment we go after,” Mr. Cherry explained. The rebranded Invest Saint Lucia will pay greater attention to local investment, consistent with ISL’s mandate to create economic activity and employment, said Chairman of Invest Saint Lucia, Pinkly Francis. This was necessary, mindful of the perception among Saint Lucians that the entity focuses on attracting foreign direct investment and less on local investment. He said that the facilitation process that ISL provides is the same for national and foreign clients.“An investor can come to Invest Saint Lucia and we will walk you through the entire process – from conceptualization of the idea, through to applying to various government entities for approvals, including concessions from the government. That has always been available to the local investor. They simply do not take advantage of it. What we have done now with our new image is to place more emphasis and make it known to the local investor that our doors are open. We have had a lot of success stories that we facilitated through Invest Saint Lucia. One example is Brice & Company. We have done a lot over the years in ensuring than Brice & Company become one of the large entities in Saint Lucia. We are also focusing on other sectors – the hotel sector, the hospitality sector, ICT. These have always been dominated by foreign direct investments. We have now embarked on developing the Anse de Sable project in Vieux Fort that focuses on creating opportunities for local investment in the hospitality sector.”Mr. Francis and his board were congratulated by Prime Minister Honourable Allen Chastanet for ISL’s many initiatives, saying that the brand they had created had been developed from the actual work of attracting investment in Saint Lucia.“Many people confuse brand with what we actually do. I think that ISL has done it backwards here. In fact, they have been doing it for some time, and are now allowing the brand to catch up with what they are doing, and that is really commendable because it is real. At the end of the day there is a tremendous amount of competition that is taking place in the world. If we want to be able to capture our fair share of investment, it means that we are going to have to be more innovative and hungrier than everybody else. We have to make a compelling case as to why somebody would want to come to this country. The job of all of us together is about achieving that… The effectiveness of doing business in government has to change.”ISL rebranding could not be timelier as the Government of Saint Lucia is moving to activate major transformational changes and improvements in the economy. These changes include the expansion of the Hewanorra International Airport, upgrading and building new roads, and the sprucing up of Capital City of Castries. Additionally, all sectors of the economy will continue to benefit substantially from infrastructure improvements in communications, water supply, sewerage and port facilities. The ISL team has scheduled promotional missions and trips in the next few weeks including CHICOS in Jamaica, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States to deliver the message to new investors.Royal blue and gold will be ISL’s new brand colours to convey the image of Saint Lucia as a crown jewel. Better inter-agency collaboration, new dynamic marketing materials and an annual investment awards, which will recognize both investors and agencies who have demonstrated excellence in service delivery, are some of the tools that will give expression to the ISL brand.last_img read more

Australasian airlines form new industry lobby group

first_imgJetstar and Virgin are allowing Bali passengers to book to alternative destinations. Photo: Steve Creedy AIRLINES in Australia and New Zealand are following the lead of their counterparts in the US and Europe to form a new trans-Tasman industry lobby group.Airlines for Australia and New Zealand (A4ANZ) will be chaired by former Australian Competition and  Consumer Commission boss Graeme Samuel and will be governed by a board made up of representatives from member airlines. It will pursue reform on public policy issues that affect aviation and the economy such as airports, taxation and fees as well as access to efficient infrastructure and broader regulatory reform. The new group will be funded by Australasia’s four biggest airline groups and members are Air New Zealand, Qantas, Jetstar, Regional Express, Tigerair Australia and Virgin Australia. The move follows the success of similar groups such as Airlines for America (A4A) and will give the industry a voice in politically sensitive areas in which individual airlines are sometimes reluctant to speak. It will also give the airlines a lobby group equivalent to other travel-related industries such as tourism and airports. And its seems airports will be high on the new group’s agenda, with Air NZ chief executive Christopher Luxon, Qantas boss Alan Joyce, Virgin chief John Borghetti and Rex executive chairman Lim Kim Hai all singling out the facilities in provided comments. “Australia and New Zealand must compete for visitors on the world stage against many other attractive destinations,’’ Luxon said.“To be competitive we must continue to improve cost and quality in all parts of the travel experience but we are constrained by a legacy of under-investment and over recovery at key airports. A4ANZ will add its voice to that ambition”.Joyce noted that airport fees and charges continue to increase while airlines were offering fares at levels significantly cheaper than they were over a decade ago. “A4ANZ’s goal is to achieve regulatory reform that will promote a competitive and sustainable airline industry in the interests of Australian and New Zealand travellers,” he said.Virgin’s John Borghetti said: “Aviation is one of the greatest enablers of tourism, trade and economic growth in our region, so it’s absolutely critical that airports operate efficiently and that investment in infrastructure benefits travellers.”Rex executive chairman Lim Kim Hai said A4ANZ was critical for regional communities as major airports were “all too ready to sacrifice critical regional interests”. “Rex looks forward to working with Professor Samuel and the Board to ensure the sustainability of all stakeholders big or small in the aviation industry,” he said.Australia’s competition watchdog said earlier this week that the nation’s four biggest airports had increased the amount they charge airlines to handle passengers by a collective $A1.57 billion over the past decade. An annual report by the Australian Competition and  Consumer Commission found that profit margins ranged from 46.7 per cent at Sydney Airport to 33.5 per cent in Perth. Brisbane came in at 44.9 percent and Melbourne at 38.2 per cent. The report found airports were recovering substantially more aeronautical revenue per passenger than a decade ago as they moved to offset increased costs per passenger and grow profit margins. “The ACCC estimates that over the past decade, these airports have collected $A1.57 billion more in revenue from airlines than they would otherwise have collected if average prices were held constant in real terms,”  ACCC chairman Rod Sims said. “Despite these much higher revenues per passenger, ratings of service quality are not materially different from those seen a decade ago.”last_img read more

Alberta premier fed up with federal government for inaction on oil and

first_imgThe current federal government has at least accomplished one thing, she said.“There was decades of factors that were at play which led to the instability that jeopardized that project. We did get the federal government to buy the pipeline. That’s not nothing. There is a vested interest they have now in getting this darn thing built.” “Albertans still need the federal government to step up and support the industry while we are trying to get through this ridiculousness of having not enough capacity to get our oil and gas to market,” Notley said.“We’ve talked about that. We’ve talked about rail. We’ve talked about other interim programs that could come into place, and we’re disappointed we’ve not heard anything from the federal government yet.”Notley announced late last year that her government will buy rail cars to transport an additional 120,000 barrels a day, which would increase the amount of oil being moved by rail in Canada by one- third.Discussions about a purchase agreement are ongoing, she said. She was asked whether the current Liberal government should receive another mandate from voters in a federal election expected later this year.“The facts of the matter is that the previous government, which happened to be from a different political party, also didn’t get it done,” she said. “Quite honestly, the considerations that have led to the ridiculousness that Albertans are so frustrated with right now … has been in the making for decades.”The federal government bought Trans Mountain and its expansion project for $4.5 billion last summer only to have the Federal Court of Appeal strike down the energy board’s approval. The court said there had been inadequate Indigenous consultation and failure to consider impacts on the marine environment. The board’s final report needs to be submitted to the federal cabinet by Feb. 22.Notley said partisanship should have nothing to do with support for the resource sector, which is an economic engine for the rest of Canada.center_img CALGARY, A.B. – Premier Rachel Notley expressed frustration again Monday about a lack of progress in completing the Trans Mountain pipeline.Notley’s comments came after a federal cabinet shuffle that left Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi in his portfolio. She said that’s probably a good thing as removing Sohi before the outcome of a court-ordered Indigenous consultation by the National Engery Board would be likely to cause even further delay.last_img read more

Nissan profits hit ‘rock bottom’

first_imgTokyo: Crisis-hit Japanese car company Nissan on Tuesday unveiled net profits at a near-decade low as it battles to recover after the shock arrest of its talismanic former boss Carlos Ghosn. Net profits for the fiscal year to March 2019 came in at 319 billion yen ($2.9 billion), the lowest since 2009/10 when the company was struggling in the wake of the global financial crisis. It was a decline of 57 per cent compared to the previous fiscal year and the profit outlook for the current fiscal year was forecast to be even worse — at 170 billion yen. The AFC South May Get Good Again — But Not This Year

1996-97.2442011.125 8Rodney Peete1989DET7.58 Tennessee TitansThe Tennessee Titans had a big offseason, bolstering their offensive line by drafting tackle Jack Conklin (No. 8 overall) and signing center Ben Jones. They also added weapons in running back DeMarco Murray and wide receiver Rishard Matthews. They appear to be sort of going for it.All these moves hinge on Marcus Mariota. The rookie QB had one hell of a first game in 2015 and a solid season overall. His 7.6 yards per attempt is the seventh-best mark for a rookie QB since 1970. It wasn’t always so dire. Back in the late 2000s, Peyton Manning was still a Colt, the Tennessee Titans had a 13-win season, and even the Jacksonville Jaguars were pretty good. In 2015, we called it “perhaps the most imbalanced division in football,” and in 2014, we wrote that the division “can’t be any worse than it was last year.” (We were correct: The division won 25 games total, up from 24 the year before.)Going into 2016, the AFC South is still awful — awful enough that our Elo-based projections put the division’s best team — the Houston Texans — at just 8.3 wins for the season.1If you haven’t encountered them on our site before, Elo ratings are a measure of overall team strength that update after each game. 7Marcus Mariota2015TEN7.62 Source: Pro-football-reference.com, Basketball-reference.com 1Ben Roethlisberger2004PIT8.88 Since 2010, Manning’s final season playing for Indianapolis, the division has taken a nosedive. But the AFC South can still be saved. The NFC West was the worst division in football for five straight seasons, from 2006 through 2010, but in 2013, it was on top and one of the best of all time. Can the AFC South manage the same kind of revival?Houston TexansHouston’s defense — led by the extremely talented and extremely corny J.J. Watt — allowed just 19.6 points per game last season, tied for 7th in the NFL (and just a hair behind the Carolina Panthers at 19.3). Unfortunately, four quarterbacks made starts for Houston’s offense. That’s never a good sign, but it’s especially bad when those four quarterbacks are as dispensable as these guys:Brian Hoyer: Has played for New England, Arizona, Cleveland and Houston.Ryan Mallett: New England, Houston, Baltimore.T.J. Yates: Houston, Atlanta, Houston again.Brandon Weeden: Cleveland, Dallas, Houston. As a unit, these mediocre journeymen averaged just 6.6 yards per attempt, good for 29th in the NFL,2They did throw 28 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. Good work! while somehow still feeding DeAndre Hopkins enough (192 targets!) to have him finish third in NFL receiving yards. They were good enough for Houston to make the playoffs at 9-7, before being humiliated by the Kansas City Chiefs. The Texans will now put their offense in the hands of Brock Osweiler, a very tall man with seven career starts. He can’t be expected to dominate out of the gate, but some consistency would be nice. If he starts at least 13 games, he’ll be the first Houston QB to do so since 2012.Indianapolis ColtsThe mid-1990s San Antonio Spurs were masters of timing. After a solid stretch under David Robinson, San Antonio had a single terrible season at the perfect moment, capturing the consensus No. 1 draft pick. The Spurs then rode that pick — Tim Duncan — to a new era of even greater success.Through 2014, the Colts looked (to the untrained eye) like they’d pulled off the same trick. Peyton Manning’s absence in 2011 meant the Colts were terrible enough to draft his replacement, Andrew Luck: 10Jim Kelly1986BUF7.49 4Russell Wilson2012SEA7.93 2Robert Griffin2012WAS8.14 Minimum eight startsSource: pro-football-reference.com 1997-2016 (T. Over the course of the season, their -75 point differential was worse than that of the Baltimore Ravens and Jaguars, who both went 5-11. The Colts have been propped up by their division, going 20-4 against the AFC South over the last four seasons and 21-19 against everyone else. The Colts’ roster is weak once you look past the QB, and it’s suddenly not so clear that Luck is the next big thing. This offseason, the Colts added very little. It could still be enough to win the AFC South — we give them a 36 percent chance of doing that — but don’t expect much past that.Jacksonville JaguarsThe Jaguars have not had a lot of success recently. The last time they finished above .500 was in 2007, and the 2013 squad had a real shot at being the worst team in NFL history. At the Jaguars’ low point that season, Vegas set them as 28-point underdogs against the Denver Broncos. But in the past couple of years, the Jaguars, while still definitely bad, have become kind of exciting. In 2013, they listed draftee Denard Robinson’s position as “offensive weapon,” which was stupid, but in a fun way! In 2014, they had their biggest comeback ever, and in 2015, two Jaguars reached 1,000 yards receiving (after none did in the previous nine seasons). Jacksonville’s defense is still a disaster (31st in points allowed in 2015), but this has become a non-depressing team that lost close, watchable games.Add to all that one of the best draft classes in both 2015 and 2016, and the confidence of Jaguars fans may soon be rewarded: It once looked like the Colts were pulling a Spurs 6Dennis Shaw1970BUF7.81 There are a lot of great quarterbacks on that list, but a few flameouts as well.
