first_imgA young Donegal couple have embarked on a major fundraising campaign to get their five month old son vital medical treatment.Caolan Melaugh was diagnosed at 10 weeks old with stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma this is a very rare and aggressive childhood cancer.There is a very high risk of relapse with neuroblastoma in that it will nearly always return. Little Caolan is currently undergoing going high intensity treatment at Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin under the exceptional team of doctors and nurses.His protocol will last 18 months which will hopefully get him to remission. Treatment in Ireland for relapse cases is very limited.Caolin’s parents Gerard and Stacey, from Killygordon, are fully behind the fundraising campaign and the high intensity chemotherapy will it is hoped will eventually leave the toddler free from cancer,There are now clinical trials taking place in America which possibly could prevent relapse. This is the treatment we would hope to get if Caolan is declared in remission at the end of his 18 month protocol. These treatments are extremely expensive and this is why we need to fundraise to give Caolan best chance at life.There are lots of fundraiser being organised and you can follow Caolan’s story on twitter @cmelaughfund and also an online of these fundraisers takes place on the 17th of May in Loose Ends Hair Salon, Ballybofey.
