Crusty Salt Incubates Raw Ingredients for Life

first_imgScience Daily asked, “Could salt crusts be key ingredient in cooking up prebiotic molecules?”  What if the answer is “No”?  Just asking the question must be newsworthy.  It invokes the power of suggestion.    Stefan Fox told members of the European Planetary Science Congress last week that his team cooked up a new idea about the origin of life.  First, they imagined what the ocean chemistry might have been like 3.8 billion years ago.  Then they added salt to their imagined seawater recipe.  After performing experiments “evaporating solutions of artificial primordial seawater and then baking the salty residue in an atmosphere of nitrogen and carbon dioxide to volcanic temperatures of 350 degrees Celsius,” they found pyrrholes – molecules that can be found in heme and chlorophyll.  The salt crusts bind to amino acids and stabilize them against evaporation, they said.    So what?  These molecules are not alive in any sense of the word.  “Our aim is to identify types of small molecules that might have participated in a hypothetical next step of chemical evolution,” they said.  So far they got some simple amino acids, peptides and pyrrholes.  (Presumably the amino acids came from Miller-style lightning discharges or from comets, and were in very small concentrations – but Fox said there were hundreds of thousands of years in which they could have accumulated.)    The astrobiologists at the conference were probably happy to hear about a new way to keep amino acids from being rapidly destroyed.  “A clear chemical pathway for the development of the raw materials of life would add support to the theory of life evolving beyond Earth,” the article ended.Allowing storytellers into the science lab (12/22/2003 commentary) was a crime against humanity.  It permitted all kinds of mischief to be tolerated in the name of science.  Fox (who should stop following in the footsteps of the previous Fox, Sidney Fox, in mythmaking, but should watch Fox News instead), is apparently unaware that salt is the last thing you want around to cook up life (06/25/2009).  But in the new Darwin Storytelling Contest view of science, anything that lends itself to bottom-up thinking (hydrogen to people) is considered progress.  No matter the illogic and contradictions, these liars will take their amino acids with toxic salt if they have to.  They need those building blocks of lie (03/19/2008).(Visited 5 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Mobile App Ecosystem 2010: A Look Back

first_imgMobile analytics firm Distimo has just released its year-end report summarizing the figures, statistics and changes which occurred in the mobile application ecosystem during the course of 2010. The report looks at the major mobile platforms of the day, including iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android, BlackBerry, Nokia, Palm and Windows (6.x and Windows Phone 7).Some of its findings are more obvious than others (e.g., free apps are downloaded in higher numbers than paid apps), but other tidbits of data may give developers pause as they consider how best to monetize their mobile applications. For example, developers may be surprised to hear that the revenue earned from in-app purchases within high grossing free apps more than doubled during the 2010, suggesting a new trend in app monetization.Growth by the NumbersIn looking at the absolute number of applications, Apple’s App Store grew the most in 2010, doubling its last-year’s total to almost 300,000 apps by year-end (excluding the iPad store). But in terms of percentages, the runners-up did better. Google’s Android Market is now 6 times the size it was last year. (For what it’s worth, Distimo pegs that size at 130,000 applications, although the third-party application monitoring service at AndroLib.com found there to be 200,000 earlier in December. This number was widely reported, often without noting that AndroLib counts everything, even apps that are no longer on the Market.)RIM’s BlackBerry App World and Nokia’s Ovi Store also tripled their growth over the year, growing to 18,000 apps on BlackBerry App World and 25,000 apps on Ovi. The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Average App PricesThe average price of paid apps on the four top platforms (iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Nokia) declined in 2010. Distimo found that price drops could be observed in the 100 most popular applications, even though the percentages differed. With the exception of the Android Market, the average listing price is lower now than it was in January 2010.The average price between all apps and just the top apps shows slightly different trends, however. On BlackBerry, the price of top apps is significantly lower than all paid apps, something which is also happening to a lesser extent in the Apple App Store (for iPhone). In Google’s Android Market and Nokia’s Ovi Store, the top apps are more expensive than the average price for all paid applications. As 2010 progressed, all four stores became more in line with each other. Here, there was a shift towards the lower price tiers where the $1.00-$1.99 tier gained popularity across the board. Note that Google’s Android Market introduced many new categories during the year, which is why Application-Health’s growth is lower than the average. For more details on the rankings of individual applications per platform, you can see Distimo’s report here. Tags:#apps#mobile#Trends Growth Categories per StoreDistimo noticed that during 2010, there were more business-oriented applications available for iPhone, reflecting the switch occurring in many workplaces where employees are now allowed to use the iPhone instead of whatever mobile phone the company’s I.T. department had previously recommended or enforced. Outside of the workplace, more people are using the iPhone as a productivity tool.Meanwhile, the business-friendly BlackBerry platform saw its App World receiving more entertainment-focused applications, as it tries to shift in the other direction, towards being a more consumer-friendly product.Android Market and Nokia’s Ovi Store saw more balanced category growth. Says Distimo, the high download volume has convinced many developers to switch monetization methods from paid to something else. The number of free apps in Apple’s App Store (for iPhone) and Nokia’s Ovi Store both skyrocketed in 2010, but the extreme difference in Ovi’s case may be attributed to the unavailability of operator billing in a number of Nokia’s markets.Download VolumeIn the U.S., the top 300 free apps generated over 3 million downloads each day during December 2010, while only 350,000 paid apps were downloaded daily. Tabrez Ansari lynching case: police drop murder charge

first_imgThe Jharkhand Police have reportedly watered down the charges against those accused of lynching Tabrez Ansari in Seraikela-Kharsawan district about four months ago.Eleven persons, against whom charge sheets have been filed for beating Tabrez, a 24-year-old man, to death, will be facing trial under Section 304 of IPC, which is culpable homicide not amounting to murder, instead of murder charges under Section 302.In April this year, Tabrez, who was working as a welder in Pune, had returned to his village Kadamdia, 15 km from the district headquarters town of Seraikela, for his marriage. On April 27, his marriage was solemnised with Sahista Pervez, 19. The couple would have returned to Pune in a few days. But on June 17 night, a few people of Dhatkidih village, a few kilometres from his house, caught hold of him and branded him a thief. He was beaten up by a mob through the night and forced to chant ‘Jai Hanuman and Jai Sriram’. On June 22, he succumbed to injuries. It was alleged that Tabrez was not given proper medical attention in time. When contacted, Seraikela-Kharsawan Superintendent of Police Karthik S. said, “this is not a matter of dilution of the case. Section 304 of IPC, which is culpable homicide not amounting to murder, has life imprisonment provision and 302 of IPC is capital punishment. There is a very thin line existing between the two sections.”“Since the medical report did not confirm the cause of death properly, the provision under Section 304 of IPC was applied. Tabrez didn’t die of injury. He died of cardiac arrest due to stress,” said Mr. Karthik. The district police chief further said, “We had gone for the second opinion from forensic experts. According to them, the death was due to combined effect of heart attack and injury. Moreover, the victim did not die on the spot, but after a few days of the attack. That is why we thought it proper to seek punishment under Section 304 of IPC after getting it vetted by legal experts.”When asked about earlier reports of Tabrez developing brain haemorrhage in the mob attack, he said the first post-mortem report did mention about ‘light’ haemorrhage.“However, the brain haemorrhage was so minimal that it could not be written. Even in the second opinion, they also talked about brain haemorrhage. It was mentioned that the fracture in the head and other injury had led to heart attack. If 302 IPC was applied, one had to establish the premeditated actions. So we deemed Section 304 to be proper,” Mr. Karthik contended. The charge sheet in the case was filed a month ago. After getting to know that there was no mention of murder charge, family members, including the wife of the deceased, had met the district police chief and demanded that the accused face grave charges.Eleven persons have so far been chargesheeted in the case and investigation was pending against two more as they were apprehended later. The photo and voice analysis of the two are yet to be done.last_img read more

Tour of the Junkanoo Club McCartneys vow to establish a Museum

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 10 Jun 2015 – The door was flung open, the way was cleared and the curious filed in to see what was left of the inside of the famous Junkanoo Club on Goode Street in Grand Turk. The site, built in the early 1970s and where political talks birthed the People’s Democratic Movement and ushered in deeper democracy for the Turks and Caicos has held up well over the years. PDM Leader, Sharlene Robinson said there are serious talks underway to elevate the status of the spot, which is still owned by the McCartneys.Deandrea Hamilton: “Should this be an historical site, should this be a stop on a tour?”Hon. Sharlene Robinson: “Absolutely, absolutely and I am so happy again that the McCartney Family has decided to create a museum and certainly his tomb, his site, the memorial site. That is one thing as party leader I am going to be pushing for because there is no way on my watch, that the young people will not know the history of this man and this movement and not appreciate the lives and the sacrificial service that were laid on the line and the persons who died fighting for a better Turks and Caicos.”Rev Terrance Smith was there in 1975 when the ‘incident’ involving a gun battle standoff with what were called, ‘oppressive’ and ‘victimizing’ members of the Police Force took place.Deandrea Hamilton: Were you scared, what was the mood like on the inside of the building?Terrance Smith: “Never was afraid in my whole life, ain’t never been afraid of nothing; never.”Deandrea Hamilton: Police are shooting at you…Terrance Smith: “Yes but we’re shooting too. Best man win. We were never afraid of the police, the police were afraid of us and that was the problem.”Smith, who remains the party’s chaplain after the weekend convention, was joined by others from that era, including women; we spoke to Rosabelle Adams who with baby in her arms stood watch outside on that fateful night June 6, 1975. “They told JAGS to let him go, JAGS said not until I get what I want for my people. They reported it to the Governor and the Governor came down here and he stood right over there and talked to JAGS. He (Governor Arthur Watson) sent to call JAGS, but JAGS told him (the Goveror) he must come to him; so he came to JAGS and JAGS told him that he wouldn’t let Commissioner Blaze go until he got what he wanted for his people. Now there were other people here in the Junkanoo, but they came of their own free will.”The story goes that JAGS, a cool-headed, determined strategist etched his demands on bits of paper, invited the Governor to come to his turf for negotiations and finally saw the demands of the people acquiesced to – the British warship retreated, an inquiry found the police officers who were from the Eastern Caribbean guilty of firing first in the standoff and by 1976, James Alexander George Smith McCartney was elected the country’s first Chief Minister. A powerful story… as for what was inside the Junkanoo Club when we went in on the 40th anniversary over the weekend; a combination of things old and new, more like a storage space now, pretty much forgotten despite its heavy history, with one token of those times still handing on the wall, a dart board which the likes of Charlie Garland, also a part of the JAGS era believes may have been from the hay day of the club.
