Kamala Harris, making history as VP pick, condemns Trump’s leadership ‘failure’

first_img“But he never did,” Obama said.As a result, Trump has left America’s “worst impulses unleashed, our proud reputation around the world badly diminished, and our democratic institutions threatened like never before,” Obama said.Trump responded by telling reporters that Obama had been “a terrible president.”Leave nothing to chance Former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who narrowly lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump, pleaded with voters to take nothing for granted in another tight contest.”This can’t be another woulda-coulda-shoulda election,” she said.Others on the night’s program included Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who unsuccessfully challenged Biden for the nomination, and Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives.Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who has become a gun control advocate after being shot and severely wounded in a 2011 assassination attempt, also spoke, along with Emma Gonzalez, a survivor of the Parkland school shooting.Young activists addressed the dangers of climate change and Hispanic immigrants made highly emotional critiques of Trump’s policies that they said had torn apart their families.Much focus was on Obama, who remains a giant force in the Democratic establishment.Although he took a back seat during the Democratic primaries, he is now campaigning hard for Biden.”Tonight, I am asking you to believe in Joe and Kamala’s ability to lead this country out of dark times and build it back better,” he said in his speech.Trump’s ‘storm center’ Obama spoke two days after his wife, Michelle Obama, opened the convention with a scathing takedown of Trump as “the wrong president for our country.””He cannot meet this moment,” she said.Tuesday’s lineup featured two other former presidents — 95-year-old Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, 74, who called the Trump White House “a storm center.”Biden, 77, the former Delaware senator who served as Obama’s vice president for eight years, was officially nominated on Tuesday.Harris, the California senator whom Biden picked to be his vice president, will speak live from Wilmington, Delaware, Biden’s hometown and campaign headquarters. The nomination is the latest in a lifetime of firsts for the 55-year-old daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother who were immigrants to the United States.Harris was the first black attorney general of California, the first woman to hold the post, and the first woman of South Asian heritage to be elected to the US Senate. The Republican Party is to hold its virtual convention next week and nominate Trump to serve four more years.Trump has chosen the White House South Lawn as the location for his acceptance speech — a controversial decision given that presidents are legally required to separate their campaigning from taxpayer-funded governing.Topics : “We’re at an inflection point.”Biden, who faces Trump on November 3, is due to give his own acceptance speech on Thursday, closing a Democratic convention held wholly online and on television due to coronavirus safety precautions.Shortly before Harris spoke, America’s first black president, Barack Obama, delivered his own condemnation of Trump — and appeal for Biden’s election.Obama said that on handing over the White House to Trump in 2017, he thought the Republican “might show some interest in taking the job seriously; that he might come to feel the weight of the office and discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care.” Kamala Harris made history Wednesday when she accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president, while joining Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to condemn President Donald Trump’s profound “failure” as a leader.Harris, the first black woman on a major party’s White House ticket, accused Trump of turning “our tragedies into political weapons.” And she urged Americans to vote for Joe Biden, “a president who will bring all of us together.””Donald Trump’s failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods,” the former California prosecutor charged in her acceptance speech.last_img read more

Letter to the editor: Hey, USD 353 board. How about a bathroom on 9th Street?

first_imgEditor’s Note: This week I’m turning over the Sunday blog to Richard Rayl. I couldn’t top this letter below…To the board members of Wellington District 353:I must say, I’m pretty irritated about the 9th street ball facility. I go there to watch my grandson play ball and enjoy watching all the kids play, but I don’t know what you as board members are thinking,Why in God’s name can’t you the members have a porter potty and that facility?I think it’s ridiculous that some of the people have to get in their cars and go somewhere else to go to the restroom! There is always a good crowd there supporting the boys playing ball. I can just imagine when all the out of town team’s come to Wellington to play ball at 9th street, They will all probably start bringing a 5 gallon bucket so they can take a leak in the dugout!   I hope all you board members of Wellington School District 353 are very proud in not providing proper facilities for the players and the spectators.SincerelyRichard Rayl Close Forgot password? You know that having played all your life in the area. Squatters go under the bridge. Actually it would be nice if they would add bathrooms on the visitors side of the football field and also on that corner and at the tennis courts. They are long over due. Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago +4 Vote up Vote down hometown boy · 379 weeks ago I would like to know just where all the money that has been taken in at the football field has gone all these years? Cue can you do a story on that. Like what it was spent on. Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago +2 Vote up Vote down Linda Ledesma · 379 weeks ago Well…just an fyi….9th street tennis courts do not have a bathroom facility either but I do not remember anyone ever posting about that. Although I’m sure tennis does not draw the spectators that baseball does so that probably never entered anyone thought process. I would not disagree that a bathroom facility of some sort should be provided. The City of Wellington does provide a portable bathroom at the Wellington skatepark and many of the tennis players/spectators use that port-a-pot. I have had to use the bathroom at sporting events and had to do a little walking to get there so if I have to go I would say….if u need to go…there is a portable bathroom not far from the ball field in 9th Street. Thanks to the City of Wellington. Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago +3 Vote up Vote down Guest · 379 weeks ago Really. We have a very nice backup facility at 9th street. Everything there was done by volunteers. We have probably the best JV facility in the area and we are complaining about a restroom. Go to Rosé Hill and you have to walk about 1/2 a mile to the restrooms. Eldorado you have to walk about the same distance to the school the walk through the hallways to find one if the building is open. Clearwater is at a park. I have been there when their’s are not open. It will cost a lot of money that we do not have. I would think we would appreciate what we have instead of gripe about what is not perfect. Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago +2 Vote up Vote down taxpayer · 379 weeks ago It’s about time for local government to use the “pay to play” rules. If you want these facilities then pay for them yourselves. Why make taxpayers pay for your recreational desires? I don’t want my property taxes to pay for this. Maybe you should pay a fee for your kids to play ball. There is nothing “FREE” Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago +3 Vote up Vote down joblow · 379 weeks ago kids already pay a 25 dollar sports fee at the beginning of the year and babe ruth players pay a fee to play also. Playing ball is not free. there is nothing free as taxpayer said. Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago 0 Vote up Vote down Crusader Fan · 379 weeks ago I think common sence would rule that bathrooms be provided for a nice facility as was built on 9th street. As well as providing a bathroom on the visitors side of the field at the football field along with building a new one on the home side and also one at the tennis courts. It can not cost all that much to put them in if they were done on a volunteer bases. Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago -4 Vote up Vote down Just me · 379 weeks ago I’m a mom who has missed games because of this. As a handicapped person on crutches, I can get home to my accessible restroom faster than I could schlep to the skate park to use a box that is not made for peoples with disabilities. I think there is something called The Americans With Disabilities Act that says there should be accessibility to restrooms in certain places. Like all of them. Hope no one decides to sue. Report Reply 3 replies · active 379 weeks ago +5 Vote up Vote down Linda Ledesma · 379 weeks ago They have port a pots that are Americans with Disability compliant. Might be something look into. Again regardless of what goes in if anything I’m sure it won’t please everyone. Report Reply 0 replies · active 379 weeks ago 12Next » Post a new comment Enter text right here!
