first_img LA MIRADA – A fire broke out Monday in a top-floor unit of a two-story apartment building in La Mirada, but no injuries were reported, authorities said. The fire was reported at 4:05 p.m. at 14311 Rosecrans Ave. and was extinguished in 12 minutes, according to officials. The cause of the blaze was under investigation. A damage estimate was not immediately tallied. Sobriety check set in Pico Rivera PICO RIVERA – Deputies from the Sheriff’s Department’s Pico Rivera Station will set up a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city on Saturday, officials announced. The checkpoint is being funded with part of a $228,000 grant the city received from the state Office of Traffic Safety. Assistance League seeks donations LA MIRADA – The Assistance League of Whittier is teaming up with Stein Mart, 15745 Imperial Highway, for “Trade In, Trade Up,” a donation drive, this weekend. Truck driver honored for safety SANTA FE SPRINGS – Con-way Freight on Monday honored driver Jorge Quezada for driving 2 million miles without an accident. The company marked Quezada’s achievement at a recent ceremony at its Santa Fe Springs service center. Quezada safely drove 2 million miles – from 1988 to 2006. Quezada, a Buena Park resident, has driven for Con-way for 24 years. Coroner trying to identify body ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST – Human remains found in a shallow grave this weekend in the Angeles National Forest were those of a man, authorities said Monday. Coroner’s officials had not identified the victim or determined the cause of death as of Monday. Hikers found the grave near East Fork Road on Saturday, said sheriff’s Homicide Lt. NORWALK – A man was shot and killed early Monday morning outside a bar in Norwalk, sheriff’s officials said. The unidentified man was shot at about 12:40 a.m. in the 4300 block of Stubebaker Road, said Deputy Ed Hernandez of the Sheriff’s Department’s Headquarters Bureau. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died, Hernandez said. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call (323) 890-5500. La Mirada home searched for pot LA MIRADA – A domestic or neighbor dispute led to an all-day wait Monday for Los Angeles County sheriff’s narcotics detectives to obtain and serve a warrant to search for marijuana at a home in the 14000 block of San Ardo Drive. Lt. Duane Harris of the Norwalk Station said deputies had gone at 11 a.m. to the home in response to a domestic or neighbor dispute. “Deputies either saw or smelled marijuana,” Harris said. They then contacted narcotics detectives, he said. The house was locked down while a search warrant was sought.
