Kolkata: The Alipore Zoological Garden authority has released various animals into the enclosures for public viewing on Monday as part of the International Tiger Day celebrations. He also mentioned that 140 new posts have been sanctioned at Alipore Zoo.Several species including a white tiger, hyenas, leopards and yellow anacondas were brought to the Zoo earlier. They have now been shifted to the enclosures. “Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee always wanted a balanced eco-system. Keeping that in mind, several species including a white tiger, hyenas, leopards and yellow anacondas were kept open for public viewing at the enclosures today (Monday),” said state Forest minister Bratya Basu on the sidelines of the International Tiger Day programme held at the Alipore Zoo premises. It is observed annually on July 29. While Rishi, the white tiger, was brought from the Patna zoo in exchange of zebra, four yellow anacondas were brought from the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology in Mallapuram. “We stay in a city where we don’t get to hear the voice of wild animals. But people residing in and around the zoo hear the roar of tigers and whines of hyenas after dark. This makes the presence of wild animals felt in the city which is very important to balance the eco-system,” added Basu. Spreading awareness about tiger conservation, the zoo authority organised a sit-and-draw competition and a skit competition for school children. The participating schools were Barisha High school, Barisha Vivekananda Girls’ High School, Jadavpur Vidyapith and Mount Litera Zee School, Maheshtala. Basu distributed the prizes to the winners. On June 28, a lioness named Shurti gave birth to three cubs at the Alipore Zoological Garden. Just after birth, the cubs and their mother were put under observation. The officials and employees are very excited to get three lion cubs in the zoo. The cubs will be put inside the enclosure for public viewing after three months.
