Nixon earns fourth honor of campaign

first_imgSenior guard Aaron Nixon was named Co-Player of the Week by the Big West Conference on Monday. Nixon, who had been selected Player of the Week on three previous occasions this season, led the 49ers’ to road victories over Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. Cal Poly’s Dawin Whiten shared the honor. John Mallinger, who attended Long Beach State, finished third Sunday in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. You’re all set! Baseball honors Dirtbags shortstop Danny Espinosa and relief pitcher Bryan Shaw earned Big West Co-Player of the Week honors. Espinosa hit .467 in four games and Shaw picked up the victory by throwing three shutout innings and striking out five in Long Beach’s 9-8, come-from-behind victory over No. 7 Texas on Saturday. The Dirtbags are 4-2. Mallinger third center_img Nixon, who had a total of 10 steals in the two games, scored 26 points in an 80-77 win over Cal Poly on Thursday. He then came back Saturday and made the game-winning shot with four-tenths of a second to play in the 49ers’ 68-67 win over Santa Barbara. Nixon scored 14 points. He is averaging 17.3 on the season. Long Beach is 17-6 overall and in first place in the Big West Conference at 8-2. The 49ers tangle with second-place Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Fullerton. last_img read more
