Remi Garde’s resolute Aston Villa hold Manchester City

first_imgRemi Garde made a positive start to his Aston Villa tenure after his side produced a stoic defensive display to neutralise a toothless Manchester City at Villa Park. The Premier League leaders were reduced to half chances throughout, with Brad Guzan’s reaction save from Raheem Sterling after the break their first opening.Kevin De Bruyne was wasteful and Fernando headed against the crossbar in injury time but City, who moved a point clear of Arsenal and Leicester at the summit for the time being, never truly worried Garde and the hosts. The former Lyon manager took the opportunity to reinstate four of the French-based players recruited over the summer who had been reduced to bit-part roles in recent weeks, with Jordan Amavi particularly impressing at left-back.After a largely non-eventful first half which, aside from a pitiful Sterling dive when looking for a penalty, passed by without any incident, Guzan pulled off a brilliant save to deny the Englishman.Sterling found himself completely unmarked at the back post but his header was instinctively saved by the American from point-blank range. While Villa were offering nothing in an attacking sense they were defending stoutly, although Garde’s side were fortunate when De Bruyne inexplicably tried to flick home Jesus Navas’s low cross when a simple tap in was required.Substitute Leandro Bacuna provided a rare burst of imagination for the hosts but his run into the box was snuffled by Joe Hart.Fabian Delph was then introduced to become the pantomime villain after his dramatic transfer U-turn in the summer which saw him leave Villa for City, with the England midfielder greeted with inflatable snakes by sections of the home crowd.Rudy Gestede, a late substitute for Jordan Ayew, then flicked a Villa corner onto the roof of Hart’s net before Fernando rattled the home crossbar in stoppage time to leave City without a win in three away league games. Pic by Donegal Daily. What he first thought was a large stone turned out to be a large and very live hand grenade.Bernard, who was digging the garden with stepson Kevin (9) said “I wasn’t sure what it was but when I tossed it with the spade I one straight away it was a hand grenade. The pin was still in the top of it.”He rushed inside to tell wife Aoife but her reactions were equally as explosive.“She told me to stop coming up with stupid excuses and not to be so lazy and finish the garden. “I had to bring her out and show her and she soon believed me then,” laughed Celtic-supporter Bernard.Bernard contacted Gardai who told the family to get out of the house at Glencar Park immediately.Detectives soon arrived on the scene and cordoned off the entire estate.Members of the Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team arrived on Saturday evening and took the live grenade away in specially constructed explosive-proof chest.Local Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan thanked local residents for their cop-operation during the evacuation. Meanwhile Kevin was back in his garden yesterday morning finishing the job which had been interrupted the previous day.He said he was just delighted to be back in his house and to be in a position to finish his garden.“I have sunburn from standing around all day on Saturday waiting to get back into my house.“I’m just delighted to get back and to be able to finish the garden off in this lovely weather. “Sure what’s the chance of finding a another live hand grenade in your garden?” he laughed.Gardai say they do not know how the grenade ended up being buried in Mr Houston’s garden. One theory is that it may have been contained in topsoil used in the gardens of the homes which are built in the 1980s.MAN WAS TOLD TO FINISH THE GARDENING BY DISBELIEVING WIFE AFTER HE FOUND GRENADE! was last modified: April 20th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:donegalGardaiGLENCAR PARKgrenadeletterkennylast_img read more
